The UTS Art Collection holds artworks by more than five hundred individual artists, with a focus on Australian painters, photographers and sculptors. The permanent Collection has been extended through an inward loan program that features Australian photographers and Western Desert painters alongside other significant Australian artists.
The earliest works in the Collection include prints and drawings by Thea Proctor, Arthur Streeton, and Hardy Wilson, through to artists such as Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, and John Coburn.
The Collection features a growing collection of work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) artists working across traditional and contemporary media. These include a small group of bark paintings, most notably by John Mawurndjul and the recent donation of a group of Western Desert paintings from Papunya.
Large scale drawings by John Firth-Smith and Brian Blanchflower have been joined by more recent drawings by Vernon Ah Kee, Sue Pedley, Tim Knowles, and Adam Cullen.
An important group of shaped colour field paintings acquired in 1970 includes works by Tony McGillick, Col Jordan, and John Dallwitz. A modular painting by Michael Johnson from the same period complements this group. Other important paintings in the Collection are by Margaret Preston, Jeffrey Smart, Tim Storrier, Richard Larter, and Tim Johnson. Euan Macleod was awarded the 1999 Archibald Prize for the self-portrait held in the UTS Art Collection.
Photography makes up a large part of the Collection, and works in the permanent Collection by artists such as those by Robyn Stacey, Matthew Sleeth, and Rosemary Laing are supported and extended by a collection of Australian photography on loan from Patrick Corrigan AM.
A total of thirty sculptures of all sizes are installed on campus, the largest of these are Growth Forms by Margel Hinder, and those by Ari Purhonen and Richard Goodwin, which are built into the facades of the Science and Law buildings. Also in this group are a remarkable pair of early sculptures by Ken Unsworth.
