Australian-Javanese artist Kartika Suharto-Martin has been invited by Leyla Stevens to perform an iteration of her work Genjer-Genjer, titled and formed around the performance of a folk song from East Java with a complex history connected to resistance and survival.
About Kartika Suharto-Martin
Kartika Suharto-Martin is a Sydney based artist and performer of Australian Javanese heritage. Through installation, performance, music and collage she explores personal history, place and identity. Kartika is a member of Woven, a collective of Australian artists with personal connections to Indonesia who have recently exhibited at Casula Powerhouse and Cement Fondu; and is a dancer, singer and performer with Suara Indonesia Dance group, a traditional Indonesian and contemporary dance group. Kartika graduated from UNSW with a BFA in 2015 and currently works as an Educator at Campbelltown Arts Centre.
